Construction Journal

The parking and traffic flow on the Chapel property have reached a point of stability. There will be no major changes to the current parking and traffic flow for a considerable period of time. The only change that will occur over the next couple weeks is that a section of the back parking lot will be used by the contractor to store materials for the building project. As these materials arrive, the contractor will need this area to store, or "lay-down," these materials. Because of this, the driving aisle and row of parking spaces in the back of the new parking area will not be available once the contractor ropes it off as a "lay-down" area.

This will take away some parking and minimally affect the traffic flow, but there will still be plenty of parking around the facility and, as always, riding the Sunday Shuttle over from Jamestown High School is a great option.

I'm happy to report that a lot of exciting bricks and mortar construction took place this week. Most notably, the vast majority of site work has been completed. Crews widened the tie-in lanes between the rear gravel parking area and the blacktop parking on the east and west sides of the Chapel. The rear gravel parking area was expanded to its final perimeter and additional parking spaces were added. Though the particulars of parking and traffic flow may vary slightly between now and the completion of our facility expansion (when the gravel areas will be paved), the new layout of our property as it will appear when all work is finished is now evident.

Access to the Education Wing through the fenced-in construction area is no longer possible. Therefore, pedestrian walkways are in place from the rear gravel area to the facility entrances on the east and west sides of the building. Click here for a diagram illustrating the new parking and traffic flow dynamics. Please take a moment to review it before you come to the Chapel on Sunday morning.

Most of the construction activity from this point forward will take place inside the construction fence as facility construction begins in earnest. Praise God for bringing us to this milestone!

Here is a map to help you find the Jamestown High School parking lot and park there on Sunday mornings. One of the three Chapel Sunday Shuttle buses will pick you up at Jamestown and transport you straight to the Chapel doors. This will make a big difference in making parking spaces available for visitors, especially while the construction project is taking up spaces. This is a great way to get involved and help Build the Church.

We are making a lot of progress on the new parking area and want to let you know why it is so important that we finish the parking area first before moving on to other aspects of the contruction process. Because the current parking area lies within the projected "footprint" of the new building, we have to finish the new parking area first in order to provide parking spaces while construction continues. Current parking spaces will be lost durng construction, so we are adding new parking spaces first before we move on to the next phase of construction.

Ground is moving and construction equipment is humming on the Chapel property. It is exciting to see the construction phase of the Building the Church Campaign begin to take shape on the property. Fletcher Frye, the Chapel's Construction Administrator, and Emory Johnson, Century Builders' Project Superintendent, are working together to supervise the activity on the construction site. In his first weekly video interview, Fletcher gave us a brief description of what has been accomplished in the past days and weeks and what to look forward to in the next phase of construction. This video is posted below and is the first in a series of updates we will provide here on the Construction Journal. A picture slideshow of Emory and Fletcher at the construction site is also available below.
